Scammers

"Do you use Amazon?"

One of our members may have had their email address list hacked and is unwittingly sending emails
asking the question above.

An email asking "Do you use Amazon?" is a phishing or data harvesting scam.

Amazon does not send casual, vague survey emails asking if you use their service.

Fraudsters use this opener to start a conversation, to test if your email address is active,

or trick you into clicking a link that steals your account details.

What You Should Do

  • Do not click any links or buttons inside the email.
  • Do not reply to the sender.
  • Delete the email right away.
  • Report it by forwarding the message as an attachment to Amazon Customer Service at reportascam@amazon.com

If you think or have been told that you are sending such emails, change your email account password immediately.

Another recent issue:-

There is no cause for alarm, but I need to make you aware of a scam which has recently made itself apparent within our u3a.

It appears that spoof e-mails have been sent out in my name requesting money to be paid into a specific account.

In addition to this, a member yesterday received a phone call showing my name as the ID caller.

The Member was unable to answer it as there was no facility to do so, and there was no trace of a calling number.

Therefore, please just be extra careful should you receive similar contact and please do NOT send any money or respond in any way to such requests.  Block them if you can.  My genuine e-mails will always show the U3a logo and I will never be asking you for money.

This may fizzle out soon when they realise their attempts to extort money are futile.

In the meantime, just be on your guard and should you receive any suspicious contact purporting to be from me, perhaps you could let me know either by e-mail or calling the Helpline 07722 161413 and leaving a message.
